# Our officials' new trick: mandatory registration of personal data databases

On January 1, 2011, Ukraine's law "On Personal Data Protection" came into force, requiring mandatory state registration of personal data databases. And it applies not only to legal entities, as you might think, but also to sole proprietors. Why is everyone talking about it only now? Because **from January 1, 2012, fines starting at 5,100 hryvnias apply for not complying with this law.**

To learn what these databases are and what to do with them, I recommend reading "[An overview of the personal data protection law](http://taxer.com.ua/blog/24)", "[Instructions for registering a personal data database](http://taxer.com.ua/blog/23)" and the article "[On personal data protection in Ukraine](http://habrahabr.ru/blogs/Dura_Lex/134678/)" on Habr, the Russian-language tech community (where would we be without Habr?).

And if you're in Odesa, go to the joint seminar by attorney Viktor Ageyev and lawyer Alexander Slavskiy: "[Registering personal data databases](http://bit.ly/bazy_dannih_registracia)".

Here are some useful answers from [Alexander](https://www.facebook.com/slavskiy/posts/2735007007593):

> A combined answer to the common questions: NO, **you don't need to register your tax reports** as a database (you register your database of counterparties); NO, it isn't your counterparty database in 1C \[the accounting software] that you register (that's just a database of counterparties); NO, **you don't need to send the databases anywhere**.

\[And YES, he adds, the chance of an inspection is low, though in a country with selective justice it rises sharply if you disagree with the government or have a large turnover.]
