An email arrived demanding that I “review your account PrivatBank ( privat24 )” by following their link. The link, of course, doesn’t lead to the domain of PrivatBank, Ukraine’s largest bank.
The message:
PrivatBank: New security notification Message-ID:
<1299663143.21869.qmail@privat24.com>From: “privat24”Content-Type: text/html
(Image lost: the Privat24 logo.)
Our general annual accounting maintenance has begun , in order to help our clients, please review your account PrivatBank ( privat24 ) immediately by:
http://www.abc-centraltaxis.com/login.privatbank.ua
People, be careful! If Privat24, PrivatBank’s online banking, does ask you for something, the message will be waiting inside Privat24 itself.
Never enter your login details on third-party sites.
See, the site posing as PrivatBank is www.abc-centraltaxis.com/, and login.privatbank.ua is just a page on that fraudulent site.
Better to ignore a message from PrivatBank (I can’t think of any way that could get you into trouble) than to lose money.
P.S. People not very familiar with internet technology may not know that the “From” field of an email can hold any address, even a genuine PrivatBank one.
