What happened first?

A timeline records an order: invitations preceded new members, then conversations and useful answers appeared. This chronology alone cannot tell you what caused the community to grow.

Notice: before does not mean because.

Timeline ≠ sequence

A timeline places events in time. A sequence gives stages an order. Equal spacing in a sequence does not imply equal duration.

Sequence ≠ causation

“B follows A” is different from “A produces B.” A causal arrow adds a claim that needs evidence beyond the drawing.

Feedback ≠ reinforcement

A loop can amplify change or counteract it. Signs, delays, and external conditions determine its behavior.

A useful picture helps you notice a relationship. A dangerous picture makes you forget that other relationships exist.

Start with the question you need to answer. Draw the simplest structure that helps. Then change the structure and ask what your first picture made invisible.

The image was supplied as a screenshot; the link above points to the author’s publication, rather than a verified original post for this particular image.

The interactive implementation, examples, schematic diagrams, complementary pairings, and exercises were added by Stan Voo for 99rabbits. This adaptation is not an official Reality Drift publication. The twelve-part taxonomy is a thinking aid, not a validated or exhaustive scientific classification. “Hides” means that a relationship is easy to overlook in a simple version of the diagram; a richer diagram can often make it visible.

  1. Larkin & Simon (1987), Why a Diagram Is (Sometimes) Worth Ten Thousand Words. Two representations can hold equivalent information while making different inferences easier to find. This is supporting research for the general principle, not the source of the twelve categories.
  2. Kirsh & Maglio (1994), On Distinguishing Epistemic from Pragmatic Action. Their Tetris research describes actions that change the world to make a problem easier to think through. Rearranging a diagram applies that broader idea here; it was not the experiment they tested.

The poster calls the support supplied by external structures “co-cognition,” and the risk of mistaking a representation for reality “cognitive drift.” Those labels are retained as the poster’s framing, rather than attributed to the papers above.
